Are Tankless Water Heaters Worth It?

Tankless water heaters are becoming one of the most popular upgrades for homeowners today. They are smaller, more efficient, and have a long lifespan. However, there are a few drawbacks, including the upfront cost and capacity limits.

So you may be wondering, are tankless water heaters worth it? Each homeowner has a different situation, so the most important thing is to be informed before you make the investment.

How Do Tankless Water Heaters Work?

Tankless water heaters use either electricity or gas to warm water as it travels through the system. The design is efficient because the heater is only heating the water that you need when you turn on a faucet, showerhead, or appliance.

Tankless Water Heater Pros and Cons

There’s no doubt tankless water heaters offer a lot of benefits to homeowners. But there are some cons that might mean these heaters are not the best option for your home. If you are wondering, “should I get a tankless water heater?” read on to learn more about the pros and cons.

Pro: Hot Water Fast

If you are familiar with traditional water heaters, you know that it can take a while to get hot water at the faucet. With a tankless water heater, you’ll get hot water almost instantly. An added benefit to the fast hot water is most homeowners end up saving a lot of water every year since they are not letting the water run while waiting for it to heat up.

Pro: Little Space Required

One of the main benefits of tankless water heaters is they require much less space in your home. In some cases, they are just a fraction of the size of traditional water heaters. The compact size means you have lots of options when it comes to placing the unit. You can easily set it up in a closet or your attic.

Pro: Extended Lifespan

Tankless water heaters have a much longer lifespan than traditional water heaters. The average tankless heater will last 20 years, while a traditional water heater lasts about 10.

Pro: Energy Efficiency

Tankless water heaters heat on demand rather than use energy 24/7 to make sure you have hot water when you need it. This approach means that tankless water heaters are as much as 25% more efficient than traditional heaters.

With the increased energy efficiency, you may be wondering, “does a tankless water heater save money?” The answer is yes; you are likely to see a decrease in your monthly energy bill.

Con: Trouble Keeping Up

Tankless water heaters can heat an unlimited stream of hot water to one source, but they may have trouble keeping up if you are using water in multiple locations at once. This underrun is an issue you won’t have with a traditional water heater, as it can store up to 80 gallons of hot water.

Con: Ongoing Maintenance

When it comes to water heaters, you’ll have to schedule maintenance no matter what system you choose. However, tankless water heaters sometimes require more maintenance than a traditional system. The overall maintenance cost should be something that you build into your overall budget.

Con: Higher Upfront Cost

Tankless water heaters almost always cost more to install than traditional systems. Not only is the heater itself more expensive, but the labor to install it is more expensive as well. However, most homeowners offset this cost with the longer lifespan and energy efficiency they gain.

Con: Inconsistent Temperatures

With tankless water heaters, there are sometimes complaints about inconsistent temperatures. This variability is likely due to capacity issues that arise when sending hot water to multiple places in the home at once.

Conclusion

Now that you know more about the advantages and disadvantages of tankless water heaters, you are in a better position to make the decision that’s right for you.

Each homeowner’s situation is unique, so a tankless water heater may be perfect for some families and not a great option for others. Before deciding to move forward, the most important thing you can do is consider all of the factors which will allow you to make an informed decision.

We’re first time home owners and needed help with some plumbing and adding a filter system. They were able to get a technician scheduled to our house within a day or so of me contacting them. Mike was super helpful and was able to complete all the jobs in a timely manner, and also cleaned up the areas he was working in. Overall a great experience and would definitely use them for future jobs.

I made an appointment on line the morning of July 31 and two trucks showed up at 1:00 pm right on time that same afternoon. Both guys were friendly and very knowledgeable. They quickly found the source of the wet patch on my ceiling which wasn’t the plumbing but a problem with the shower curtain. This is the second time I have called Paul. Both times I got outstanding service and will always call on Paul the Plumber for any plumbing problems in the future. Very reasonable cost for the visit.

First time customer, and am very pleased with the whole experience. The highlight was definitely with the technicians assigned to the job and their work – Tyree and Corey were clean, polite, well-informed, and very helpful with some of the questions I had along the way. Their work appears to be top-notch, and they made sure no mess was left behind. Will definitely be calling and requesting these two again on any future needs.

DJ from PTP was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. My shower was not draining and it became a bigger project than I thought it would and they came out quickly and were able to fix my problem. Then when my water heater had a slow leak they came back out quickly to attend to it and fix my problem. I really appreciate their hard work. Thank you so much!! Would definitely recommend them.

I cannot say enough about this company!!! Their only concern is that you are up and running again with no worries. I’ve had Kyle the plumber, and Josh their electrician out here and both are polite, well trained and you can tell they truly care about getting you back in service. Great service, well trained caring staff! I will never go anywhere else!

John was wonderful. He found the problem right away and fixed it. He checked other outlets just to make sure I would be safe. He explained different programs the company offers also. I’m very happy.

Arrived as scheduled to fix a leak from the shower valve. Tried to fix old 30 or 40 year old unit but had to replace with a new one. Quality work, parts and cleaned up when they were done. Would definitely use again.

Josh was amazing. He was able to install my ring doorbells with no issues. He also did a great check of my homes smoke detectors and a few electrical plugs. He was thorough, Knowledgeable, and easy to work with. I would definitely use them again.

S. Baraket

These are the after photos of the Rinnai tankless water heater installation and vent to the outside. It was important to me that the crew was able to use the existing vent hole to the outside to run both the intake vent pipe and the outside vent pipe. It made the job very clean and did not change the appearance of the outside wall. A shout out to Mike E, Caleb, Josh & Corey

Michele

I’ve used Paul the Plumber twice now for electrical issues and they have been wonderful each time. They are fast, polite, knowledgeable, and very fairly priced. They explain everything well and answer my questions thoroughly and I feel safer now knowing what was causing my electrical issues and having it fixed! I will be using Paul the Plumber for all my household needs going forward

V. Vincze

We had an issue with our water…too hard, calcium deposits, and very little pressure in our master bathroom shower only. The techs (Mike E. & Tyler S.) arrived right on time. They were friendly and very personable. After installing our whole house filtration system and successfully finding the issue with our master bathroom, they left the work areas in pristine condition. They were meticulous in their work, and I highly recommend them for any plumbing needs!

M. Richdale

Thanks to Mike Vallee from Paul the Plumber for responding to this new customer’s call so quickly. He was courteous, thorough, explained the repair he was doing and left the work area spotless. I highly recommend Paul the Plumber (and Mike!) to anyone looking for a reliable plumbing company.

What a fantastic business. Helped us work with our water district in resolving meter replacement issues. They also fixed a pipe leak that had developed over time. Caleb was wonderful and answered our questions as well as working with the water district engineer on the meter issues. So easy to work with.
