6 Boiler Repair Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

With fall temperatures beginning to set in, now is the time to ensure that your boiler system is working right. It’s probably been months since you had to worry about heating your home, and during that time, your system may have developed some problems.

Whether those problems are big or small, it’s important not to put off boiler repairs. Even minor issues can cause your home’s heating system to be less efficient, and those little things can turn into big repairs in a heartbeat.

Here are some of the most common signs that you may need boiler repair. When you turn on your system, look and listen for any of these problems. If you notice any, make sure to call your plumber as soon as possible to get your boiler repairs started.

Leaking Water

Because boilers rely on water to heat your home, it’s no surprise that leaks or drips are a common reason that homeowners call for boiler repairs. There are several points at which your boiler system may develop a leak, and depending on where the leak is, repairs could be minor or extensive.

Drips coming from a relief valve or a fitting may be relatively easy to repair. However, if the boiler tank itself is starting to leak, then it likely means you’ll need to replace the entire tank before the small drip becomes a gusher.

Not Enough Water Pressure

If your boiler won’t turn on or turns on and off intermittently, one cause may be a lack of water pressure in the system. Boilers need a minimum amount of water to function correctly, and if the water level drops below that level, the system shuts down. Pressure loss may result from a number of issues, from a consistent leak to a broken seal.

Pilot Light Problems

While older boiler systems rely on a constant pilot light to heat the boiler tank, newer models use an intermittent system that turns the flame on (only when heat is needed). This can save you significant amounts of money over time and is more environmentally friendly.

No matter the age of your system, if your pilot light isn’t coming on, your boiler won’t be able to provide your home any heat. This boiler repair can be as simple as repairing a single component or as complicated as replacing the entire unit. In any case, repairing a pilot light is also a safety issue, so be sure not to put it off.

Odd or Unusual Noises

In an ideal world, your boiler system should be more or less silent. You may hear an occasional noise (especially when the system turns on or off), but it should run very quietly for the most part. That’s why if you hear rumbling, gurgling, or whistling noises, you should call a qualified plumber immediately.

Strange noises in your boiler are a sign that there’s something wrong with your system. For instance, kettling results from a mineral imbalance in your water, which can cause a buildup on important parts of your boiler system. Not only are the noises annoying, but they can quickly become major problems that can end up being very costly to repair.

Energy Efficiency Issues

If you notice that your heating bills are starting to go up for no identifiable reason, there may be an issue with the efficiency of your boiler. Sometimes this is the result of a buildup inside your radiators or elsewhere in your system. Other times, it may have more to do with the amount of air getting into your system.

One way to prevent these boiler repair issues is to have your boiler inspected every year, so a technician can tune up your system and make sure your boiler is working at peak efficiency.

Your Heat Isn’t Working

While getting no heat at all is the most obvious sign you have a problem, there are many reasons why your system may not be working. If your system isn’t providing you heat, don’t hesitate to call in a professional plumber for your boiler repairs. The sooner they get the job started, the faster you’ll get the heat your home needs.

DJ from PTP was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. My shower was not draining and it became a bigger project than I thought it would and they came out quickly and were able to fix my problem. Then when my water heater had a slow leak they came back out quickly to attend to it and fix my problem. I really appreciate their hard work. Thank you so much!! Would definitely recommend them.

What a fantastic business. Helped us work with our water district in resolving meter replacement issues. They also fixed a pipe leak that had developed over time. Caleb was wonderful and answered our questions as well as working with the water district engineer on the meter issues. So easy to work with.

First time customer, and am very pleased with the whole experience. The highlight was definitely with the technicians assigned to the job and their work – Tyree and Corey were clean, polite, well-informed, and very helpful with some of the questions I had along the way. Their work appears to be top-notch, and they made sure no mess was left behind. Will definitely be calling and requesting these two again on any future needs.

Arrived as scheduled to fix a leak from the shower valve. Tried to fix old 30 or 40 year old unit but had to replace with a new one. Quality work, parts and cleaned up when they were done. Would definitely use again.

We had an issue with our water…too hard, calcium deposits, and very little pressure in our master bathroom shower only. The techs (Mike E. & Tyler S.) arrived right on time. They were friendly and very personable. After installing our whole house filtration system and successfully finding the issue with our master bathroom, they left the work areas in pristine condition. They were meticulous in their work, and I highly recommend them for any plumbing needs!

I cannot say enough about this company!!! Their only concern is that you are up and running again with no worries. I’ve had Kyle the plumber, and Josh their electrician out here and both are polite, well trained and you can tell they truly care about getting you back in service. Great service, well trained caring staff! I will never go anywhere else!

Nick Boudreux

Had a well pump that was shorting out and pretty much had no water. Adrian from this company not only got out next day but was great to work with. He was very friendly and knowledgeable I would definitely recommend this company to anyone that needs work done! Thanks again guys!

S. DesMarais

Josh was amazing. He was able to install my ring doorbells with no issues. He also did a great check of my homes smoke detectors and a few electrical plugs. He was thorough, Knowledgeable, and easy to work with. I would definitely use them again.

T. Minasian

These are the after photos of the Rinnai tankless water heater installation and vent to the outside. It was important to me that the crew was able to use the existing vent hole to the outside to run both the intake vent pipe and the outside vent pipe. It made the job very clean and did not change the appearance of the outside wall. A shout out to Mike E, Caleb, Josh & Corey

S. Baraket

Never used Paul The plumber company before but I’m glad I did. Very courteous, professional and pleasant from the answering service (Diane) to employees (Jeremy). They diagnosed the problem and fixed it in no time. Very happy and satisfied with their service. Definitely will use again. Thank you

I made an appointment on line the morning of July 31 and two trucks showed up at 1:00 pm right on time that same afternoon. Both guys were friendly and very knowledgeable. They quickly found the source of the wet patch on my ceiling which wasn’t the plumbing but a problem with the shower curtain. This is the second time I have called Paul. Both times I got outstanding service and will always call on Paul the Plumber for any plumbing problems in the future. Very reasonable cost for the visit.

We’re first time home owners and needed help with some plumbing and adding a filter system. They were able to get a technician scheduled to our house within a day or so of me contacting them. Mike was super helpful and was able to complete all the jobs in a timely manner, and also cleaned up the areas he was working in. Overall a great experience and would definitely use them for future jobs.
