When it comes to home maintenance, making ongoing repairs to save money is a good idea right? Usually, but sometimes it makes more sense financially to repipe your home’s components or appliances.
The question is, how do you what the right move is: repair or replace? Each situation is different, but here are a number of telltale signs that indicate you may consider replacement rather than repair.
Washing Machine Replacement
If your washing machine is more than eight years old, assume that it probably needs to be replaced. If it shakes when you use it, makes weird noises and leaks often, then the repairs are probably not worth it and, it is going to break down again soon.
Also, check your washing machine hoses. Did you know that ruptured washing machine hoses are one of the leading causes of major water damage in the home? If they are older than about five years, you need to replace them. Consider using stainless steel hoses instead of rubber, because they are more durable.
Everything but the Kitchen Sink
Do you need a new sink? For the sink bowl itself, if it is cracked or discolored, you need a new one. As for the plumbing, open the cabinet. Is there water damage or pooling water?
How about corroded pipes, especially in the joints? If your plumbing is rusted or has a lot of mineral deposits on it, get it replaced. A small leak now will only evolve into a major problem if the pipes are corroded.
Do I Replace My Shower?
Is your shower frequently clogged? Are the drains or fixtures corroded? Do you have to fix a leaky shower head more often than you should?
These are all signs that you should get yourself a new shower. As a bonus, while you are doing it, upgrade to a low-flow showerhead.
You’ll help the environment and save money on your water bills at the same time.
Water Heater Replacement
If your storage tank water heater is 15+ years old, or if your tankless water heater is 20+ years old, that is a sign right away that you need a new one.
They don’t last forever and any repairs done on a system that old may be a waste. Similarly, if you spot major leaks, corrosion or hear loud noises, you may have a more serious problem to deal with.
To try to extend the life of a younger unit, get in the habit of draining it to about half every year, to rid it of sediment.
It can be a tough call whether to repair or replace. Call your local plumber for a second opinion.
