How Do I Size a Boiler for My House?

Boilers are known as hydronic or radiant heating systems because they use hot water to heat your home. In the U.S., boilers are less common than furnaces, but many homeowners use them all throughout the country.

If you’re using a boiler to heat your home and need to upgrade or if you’re switching from a furnace to a boiler, you’ll probably have a lot of questions and considerations on your mind.

One of the most important considerations about boiler installations is the size of your home. To get the correct boiler size for your house, it’s important not to pick a boiler that’s too small or too large for your home. If you pick one that’s the wrong size, you could end up not having enough power or wasting energy.

If Your Boiler Is Too Small

First, let’s discuss what happens if you select a boiler too small for your home. You may be tempted to go with a smaller option during your search because the price point is much lower. However, there are consequences of picking a boiler that’s not large enough for your home.

If you go with a smaller boiler, it could struggle to heat your home to the desired temperature. This can result in uneven heating or a home that’s not as warm as you like.

Additionally, you’ll be asking too much of your small boiler, and it will need to run constantly to try to meet your needs. This means your energy bill will be higher each month than if you went with an appropriately-sized boiler.

Even though you’ll save money on the initial cost, you’ll inflate your bills each month. If your small boiler is working overtime trying to heat your home, it will run through its lifespan more quickly and you’ll probably need more frequent repairs than if you went with a larger size.

If Your Boiler Is Too Large

Oftentimes, people think the biggest heater is the best option, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Just like a boiler that’s too small, one that’s too large can cause problems, as well. Sizing the boiler for your home is all about finding the perfect fit.

If your boiler is too large for your home, it will produce more heat than the system can dissipate. This means your boiler will have a short burning time each time it’s needed, which results in decreased efficiency.

So even though you’d think a larger boiler would be more efficient, if it’s too big, you’ll actually be wasting energy. Not only that, but the temperature in your boiler might get too high because it cycles on and off frequently. This could lead to strain that your boiler is not designed for or leaks.

How to Choose the Right Size for Your Home

You’re probably wondering: So how do I size a boiler for my home? To size a boiler, you must start by looking at the boiler capacity in terms of BTUs (British Thermal Units).

The BTU of your boiler is determined by the amount of energy needed to increase the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

Your home has a BTU requirement that’s based on a few factors. Your geographical location and climate, the number of doors and windows in your home, and the amount of insulation in your walls and ceilings all factor into your home’s BTU requirement.

The best way to understand the BTU calculation is to figure that you need about 50 BTU per square foot of indoor space in a cold climate; 35 BTU per square foot if you live in a moderate climate; and 20 BTU per square foot if you live in a warm or hot climate.

Which size residential gas boiler you’ll need will depend on the climate you live in and the size of your home. For example, if you have a 2,000 square foot home in an average moderate climate, you’ll need a boiler that can produce about 70,000 BTUs.

If you live in a moderate climate with a 3,000 square foot home, you’ll need a boiler that can produce approximately 105,000 BTUs.

Boiler sizing is not very complex, but it’s important you don’t fall into the trap of getting one that’s too small for your home to save money. You’ll also want to avoid wasting energy on a boiler that’s too large for your home, even though you may think it’s the best option.

Working with a professional HVAC company can help you determine the right boiler for your home. A professional can ensure you pick one that’s the appropriate size, as well.

We’re first time home owners and needed help with some plumbing and adding a filter system. They were able to get a technician scheduled to our house within a day or so of me contacting them. Mike was super helpful and was able to complete all the jobs in a timely manner, and also cleaned up the areas he was working in. Overall a great experience and would definitely use them for future jobs.

J. Shea

John was wonderful. He found the problem right away and fixed it. He checked other outlets just to make sure I would be safe. He explained different programs the company offers also. I’m very happy.

Had a well pump that was shorting out and pretty much had no water. Adrian from this company not only got out next day but was great to work with. He was very friendly and knowledgeable I would definitely recommend this company to anyone that needs work done! Thanks again guys!

Arrived as scheduled to fix a leak from the shower valve. Tried to fix old 30 or 40 year old unit but had to replace with a new one. Quality work, parts and cleaned up when they were done. Would definitely use again.

I made an appointment on line the morning of July 31 and two trucks showed up at 1:00 pm right on time that same afternoon. Both guys were friendly and very knowledgeable. They quickly found the source of the wet patch on my ceiling which wasn’t the plumbing but a problem with the shower curtain. This is the second time I have called Paul. Both times I got outstanding service and will always call on Paul the Plumber for any plumbing problems in the future. Very reasonable cost for the visit.

DJ from PTP was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. My shower was not draining and it became a bigger project than I thought it would and they came out quickly and were able to fix my problem. Then when my water heater had a slow leak they came back out quickly to attend to it and fix my problem. I really appreciate their hard work. Thank you so much!! Would definitely recommend them.

I cannot say enough about this company!!! Their only concern is that you are up and running again with no worries. I’ve had Kyle the plumber, and Josh their electrician out here and both are polite, well trained and you can tell they truly care about getting you back in service. Great service, well trained caring staff! I will never go anywhere else!

First time customer, and am very pleased with the whole experience. The highlight was definitely with the technicians assigned to the job and their work – Tyree and Corey were clean, polite, well-informed, and very helpful with some of the questions I had along the way. Their work appears to be top-notch, and they made sure no mess was left behind. Will definitely be calling and requesting these two again on any future needs.

T. Minasian

These are the after photos of the Rinnai tankless water heater installation and vent to the outside. It was important to me that the crew was able to use the existing vent hole to the outside to run both the intake vent pipe and the outside vent pipe. It made the job very clean and did not change the appearance of the outside wall. A shout out to Mike E, Caleb, Josh & Corey

Michele

I’ve used Paul the Plumber twice now for electrical issues and they have been wonderful each time. They are fast, polite, knowledgeable, and very fairly priced. They explain everything well and answer my questions thoroughly and I feel safer now knowing what was causing my electrical issues and having it fixed! I will be using Paul the Plumber for all my household needs going forward

H. MacPherson

I would recommend Paul the Plumber 100%. They offered same/next day service. They were friendly, professional and quick – from the office staff to the technicians. Overall an amazing experience from start to finish.

V. Vincze

We had an issue with our water…too hard, calcium deposits, and very little pressure in our master bathroom shower only. The techs (Mike E. & Tyler S.) arrived right on time. They were friendly and very personable. After installing our whole house filtration system and successfully finding the issue with our master bathroom, they left the work areas in pristine condition. They were meticulous in their work, and I highly recommend them for any plumbing needs!

S. DesMarais

Josh was amazing. He was able to install my ring doorbells with no issues. He also did a great check of my homes smoke detectors and a few electrical plugs. He was thorough, Knowledgeable, and easy to work with. I would definitely use them again.

D. Weaver

What a fantastic business. Helped us work with our water district in resolving meter replacement issues. They also fixed a pipe leak that had developed over time. Caleb was wonderful and answered our questions as well as working with the water district engineer on the meter issues. So easy to work with.
